Matthew "Matt" Guion Maher (born November 10, 1974) is a contemporary Christian music (CCM) artist, songwriter, and worship leader originally from Newfoundland, Canada, who later relocated to Tempe, Arizona. He has written and produced five solo albums to date. Three of his albums have reached the Top 25 Christian Albums Billboard chart and four of his singles have reached the Top 25 Christian Songs chart. He is a practicing Catholic.

Biography
Maher was born and raised in Newfoundland, Canada. His parents recognized his musical talent, and he grew up taking piano lessons and immersing himself in a broad variety of music and playing in concert and jazz ensembles, singing in a choir, and playing in a garage rock band.

Maher received a scholarship from the Jazz Department at Arizona State University, where he studied Jazz Piano and got his music degree. He paid for his first three years of college by playing piano in a hotel.

Matt currently lives in Tempe, Arizona. He is involved in building community at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel parish. He married Kristin Fisher on September 10, 2010. Their son, Michael Conor, was born on August 1, 2011.

Career
In the spring of 2007 Maher signed to Essential Records. He released his first big-label album (and his fourth album overall) Empty and Beautiful on April 8, 2008. His second album with Essential Records, Alive Again, was released on September 22, 2009. In fall of 2009, Maher toured with Michael W. Smith on the "New Hallelujah Tour". Alive Again peaked in sixth position on Billboard magazine's Top Christian Albums chart in 2009.

When Pope Benedict XVI visited the United States in April 2008, Maher was asked to lead worship for crowds of thousands at the Rally for Youth and Seminarians in Yonkers, New York, which also featured Kelly Pease, tobyMac and Third Day, among other musicians. He was subsequently interviewed on Fox News, where he played his title track from Empty and Beautiful on the secular airwaves.

Maher was a guest singer songwriter speaker at Crowder's Fantastical Church Music Conference at Baylor University Fall 2010 put on by the David Crowder Band. In early 2011 he toured the United States on the Rock And Worship Roadshow headlined by MercyMe.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Renowned singer/songwriter/worship leader, Matt Maher, received his second career GRAMMY nomination last night in the Best Contemporary Christian Music Song category for his contribution as a writer on the moving anthem, “White Flag,” recorded by Chris Tomlin for Passion: White Flag. The song was co-written by Tomlin, Matt Redman and the award-winning songwriter/producer, Jason Ingram. Maher’s first nomination was for “I Lift My Hands” which garnered a GRAMMY nod in the same category during the 54th Annual GRAMMY season.

“It's a real honor to be part of an amazing team of fellow writers and artists, and most importantly, friends” says Maher. “The efforts that the Passion movement have made to be a light in the world, and their servanthood to the poor is a great example of the core message of the Gospel. With the Giglio's pastoral leadership, the fact that this song played a small part in inspiring college students to come together at Passion 2012 and give three million dollars to six anti-slavery organizations...well that is the best honor we, as writers, can receive."

Nominations for the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards were announced last night during The Recording Academy’s “The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!! — Countdown To Music's Biggest Night," a one-hour CBS entertainment special broadcast live for the first time ever from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

The 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on GRAMMY Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and once again will be broadcast live in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround-sound on CBS from 8–11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).

(Nashville, Tenn. — Following a 2012 GRAMMY Award nomination for his writing contribution to Chris Tomlin’s “I Lift My Hands,” Matt Maher continues his ever-growing contribution to songs for churches worldwide. Additionally, the singer/song-writer/worship leader continues to see positive momentum on the road with Third Day’s “Make Your Move” tour and the release of his latest music video “Rise Up.”

"As the body of Christ, the church has a unique opportunity to impact culture and influence change. Writing alongside the talented artists and songwriters I've had the privilege of working with is such an honor and even more so when these songs get into the hearts and minds of the church. If we can collectively do what we do best in order to see the body come together and truly show a dying world something worth living (and dying) for, then that's a tremendous honor and I'm thankful for the opportunities I have to be a part of a global conversation about a universal truth."

Maher’s music not only continues to have a presence in Sunday worship services across the globe but also on tour. Having completed another successful run of “The Love In Between” tour this January and February featuring special guest, Audrey Assad, he immediately joined label mate Third Day on its 2012 Spring “Make Your Move” Tour which launched March 16 and will visit 30 + cities in the U.S.

Most recently, Maher premiered his latest music video and single, “Rise Up” last week. The video received more than 24,000 views its first day and continues to be seen over multiple formats. In promotion of “Rise Up,” Maher is also making the single available as a free download on NoiseTrade http://noisetrade.com/mattmaher. The song has been in the top 5 on the site over the past two weeks. In addition, “Rise Up” was among the top three most-added songs at AC Radio this week (for three consecutive weeks) and is No. 24 on the Billboard National Audience Chart.
