The Statler Brothers were formed in 1955 as the Four Star Quartet. They performed southern gospel music at churches around Stauton, Virginia. They had changed their name to the Kingsmen before a secular group with that name had a hit with "Louie, Louie" in 1963. Then they decided on the name the Statler Brothers after the brand of tissue in a hotel room. In 1964 they started as Johnny Cash's opening act and backup singers. They performed with Cash through 1972.

The group became a mainstream country act, but made a concious effort to include Gospel music on each of their albums, and also produced albums of entirely Gospel music. The group disbanded and retired in 2002. They were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
