Barnabas was a hard rock band that debuted in 1977 and are considered one of the pioneers of Christian hard rock and heavy metal. The band started when Monte Cooley put an ad in a southern California Guitar Center that he was trying to form a Christian metal band. Three years later they released their first album Hear the Light. Barnabas moved around a lot and spent time at the Highway Missionary Society in Oregon, and Jesus People USA in Chicago. But faced with constant criticism from conservative evangelists of the day and the financial demands of maintaining a band, Barnabas eventually disbanded in 1986, but not before releasing five highly regarded metal records.
